Community planning and outreach is paramount to a transit systems successful implementation of their system or new projects. WSDOT’s new Title VI and environmental justice mapping application has a bonus use – Community planning analysis. The same demographic information that describes title VI compliance and environmental justice can be used to understand and plan your outreach and community planning work. Using US Census data (ACS), this GIS web based tool allows the user to define a service area and view related socio-demographic data, including language, race and ethnicity, age, and poverty status. This presentation will walk through the ins and outs of developing and using this tool, the key decision points on data source and software choices, and the challenges along the way. See how the creation of this tool has turned out to meet more than just federal compliance.

Biography: 

Lise Goss is the GIS and CTR Data and Analysis Manager for the Public Transportation Division at the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Lise has been providing GIS and data analysis for WSDOT for 10 years. Her primary areas of expertise are analysis, statistics, GIS, emergency management, data management, remote sensing, and project management. Lise recently completed her master's degree in homeland security (geospatial intelligence) at Penn State. The information that she will be providing you today is not classified. :)
