Telling Stories about a Changing World

I'll discuss how our story maps team combines intelligent maps, multimedia content, and web apps to tell stories about the world. I'll demo a few of our own stories, as well as efforts created by a growing community of story map publishers. I'll show how users can configure our open-source apps and templates to build and publish their own stories. And I'll exhort the NWGIS participants to "emancipate" their data to inform and inspire new audiences.

Keynote Speaker, Allen Carroll

Esri's program manager for ArcGIS Online content.
He is the former chief cartographer at National Geographic and was instrumental in creating the National Geographic Map Machine, the society's first interactive atlas on the web.

On Employment and Education in the Geospatial Industry

This talk addresses three issues. First I’ll review recent new evidence about the geospatial industry’s vigor and growth in the U.S. and worldwide, along with implications for workforce needs. Second, I’ll look into difficulties employers face in hiring recent graduates. Finally I’ll suggest what educators and industry can do about the problem, and what Esri’s doing to help.

Closing Keynote, David DiBiase

The new director of Esri's education team will look into the future of Esri's education community. He previously served as director of the Dutton Institute at Penn State University and is a pioneer in online GIS education. In addition, he is the president of the GIS Certification Institute and was the lead editor of the GIS&T Body of Knowledge.
